Ultimate. It's a bold word.
At its core definition, it means to be a fundamental fact of principle or even a defining moment of achievement.
Considering you're already viewing this page, one could assume the correlation of Ultimate with BMW's long-held advertising of "The Ultimate Driving Machine" is something that doesn't need to be explained.
But hey this wouldn't be an ASM Automotive description without some fun backstory...
In 1968, following a massive debt restructuring, the young Bavarian company decided a shake-up was in order with the production of their first inline-six engine since before WW2. With a new engine, came the need for a new car. In this case, the "New Six" would herald a break from the economical cars and niche roadsters of the 50s for a driver-focused sedan with an emphasis on grand touring and controlled dynamics. While some may not remember the New Six, its eventual replacement and expansion of the 3, 6, and 7 series would be revered by the world over 54 years later.
While there are those who still cling to the Americana Dream of wafting around in a luxo-barge with so much veneer that it auditioned to be the replacement host of Let's Make A Deal, for over two decades those in the know understand that the 7 Series is the ultimate expression of success and prosperity.
In fact, the 7 Series heralded the cool and crisp modern executive that we come to think of when we discuss power, wealth, and an aura of mystery. It's the car of celebrities who don't flash their latest earnings, the endless row of private parking spots in Manhattan, the de facto choice of those needing to fly under the radar but not sacrifice comfort, handling, and all the latest technology.
Don Draper had his Cadillac and his existential crisis; James Bond drove a 7 Series.

BMW 7 Series Overview
The BMW 7 Series is a full-size luxury sedan manufactured and marketed by the German automaker BMW since 1977. It is the successor to the BMW E3 "New Six" sedan and is currently in its sixth generation.
The 7 Series is BMW's flagship car and is only available in a sedan bodystyle (including long wheelbase and limousine models). It traditionally introduces technologies and exterior design themes before other models in BMW's lineup.
The first generation of the 7 Series was powered by straight-6 petrol engines, and following generations have been powered by inline-4, straight-6, V8 and V12 engines with both natural aspiration and turbocharging. Since 1995, diesel engines have been optional in the 7 Series.
Unlike the 3 Series and 5 Series sedans, BMW has offered a non pureblood M variant, the BMW M760 6.6L V12 (at the time the most powerful BMW ever made, not to be confused with BMW 760 6.6 V12 which does not offer the same performance). The Alpina B7 (G12) serves as one of the high-performance variants of the 7 Series.
Fifth Generation Featured:
The fifth generation of the BMW 7 Series consists of the BMW F01 (sedan version) and BMW F02 (long-wheelbase sedan version) full-size luxury sedans. The F01/F02 generation was produced by BMW from 2008 to 2015 and is often collectively referred to as the F01.
The F01 was the first BMW vehicle to be available with a hybrid drivetrain, an 8-speed automatic transmission and a turbocharged V12 engine. It was the second 7 Series to be available with a turbocharged petrol engine (the first being the European E23 745i), and all-wheel drive (xDrive). The wheelbase was increased by 8 cm over the outgoing 7 Series. Other model codes used for this generation were F03 for the "High Security 7 Series" armored car and F04 for the "ActiveHybrid 7" hybrid-electric model.
In July 2015, the BMW 7 Series (G11) began production as the successor to the F01.
